A bouquet of flowers upon arrival, a relaxing massage after check-in and a fabulous evening of dinner and dancing is the perfect romantic getaway -- and just some of the ways the historic Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center is enhancing its renowned hospitality.

Amid a $6.5 million renovations project to update guest rooms and corridors, The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center is also transforming the guest experience. Beginning in April, The Hotel Roanoke introduces in-house spa services, floral services and new dining and entertainment offerings in the legendary Regency Room and Pine Room Pub.

"We are delighted to be offering our guests new services that will be an impressive addition to our property," said Gary Walton, general manager. "This is a fabulous way to kick off the next 125 years after celebrating our 125th anniversary in 2007. Our new luxury services fit perfectly with our completely renovated Hotel, and will appeal to incoming groups, wedding parties and guests seeking a unique experience."

DID YOU KNOW?

The Fire of 1898

A fire in the kitchen broke out the afternoon of July 1, 1898 and quickly spread through the frame structure of the Hotel. The photo, taken from across the railroad tracks, shows a lawn filled with spectators and littered with materials salvaged from the burning building while smoke pours out of every available crevice.

The November 30, 1936 Roanoke Times recalls:

As the blaze soared and it was evident that the fire department was unable to control it, hundreds of men rushed in from the Roanoke Machine Works and assisted in saving much of the furniture and carpets and destroying thousands of dollars worth of hotel equipment in their efforts to save something from the flames. Beds, dressers, mattresses and other furniture, including bowls and pitchers with which many of the rooms were equipped, were hurled from the second and third floor windows, while carpets were wrenched from the floors and piled out in the greatest confusion. Willing hands on the outside were ready to drag the furnishings to vantage points on the lawn to the south and west of the blazing building, all of which was practically destroyed with the exception of the east wing. The roof of the west wing was burned and the interior was gutted. The lobby and office were disfigured by flames, but the construction was held intact.

It was feared that the entire hotel would have to be rebuilt, however it was only shut down for a few months and by the end of September, guests slowly began returning. A double wedding was held in October officially declaring the Hotel Roanoke was again open for business.
