THE HOTEL ROANOKE & CONFERENCE CENTER

CALLING ALL MEMORABILIA: THE HOTEL ROANOKE WANTS YOU
Hotel Reaching out to Public to Identify and Gather Historical Artifacts
to be Displayed During 125 Days of Celebration

ROANOKE, Va. (May 29, 2007) - Residents of the Roanoke Valley are passionate about the Hotel Roanoke - so much, in fact, that many furnishings, utensils, accessories and other memorabilia disappeared when the Hotel closed for six years in 1989.
With the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, a Doubletree hotel, about to celebrate its 125th anniversary with 125 days of celebration later this year that will include special events and exhibits open to the public, now's the time to dig through boxes, check the attic and scour the basement for artifacts illustrating the Hotel's historical, social and economic ties to the Roanoke Valley.
But don't worry - you can have the stuff back.
"We know how much The Hotel Roanoke means to area residents," said general manager Gary Walton. "Just about everyone has a memory of the Hotel or participated in emotional events that occurred here, like weddings and other social gatherings. How deep this connection is was evident in 1989, when items were removed from the Hotel by public sale - or other ways. It seems that people wanted to preserve their memories by taking things from the Hotel home with them."
Now, the public is invited to share these nostalgic items as the Hotel prepares displays of artifacts to illustrate its rich history. Here's how you can be a part of this unique event:

  • If you have Hotel Roanoke items, or know of some, consider lending the items back to the Hotel for special exhibits.
  • Beginning August 1, 2007, you can bring Hotel Roanoke items to the Hotel's executive offices.
  • Every item will be carefully catalogued with a receipt and returned to the person who provided the item following the 125 days of celebration.
  • Those donating mementos will be asked to consider a donation to a charity of their choice as "amnesty" for keeping memorabilia.
  • Items will be on display from Sept. 7, 2007 to Jan. 11, 2008. Items will be rotated and replaced often, so visitors will see different items during every visit.
To donate an item or for additional information, call (540) 853-8203. To sign an online guestbook and share memories, visit http://www.hotelroanoke.com/guestbook.
