Learn the 1940's Dance That Swept The South
ROANOKE, Va. - (January 10, 2007) - Club aka: is the new place to shag on Friday nights.
The Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, a Doubletree Hotel, in collaboration with the Roanoke Valley Shag Club, invites everyone to dance the shag. Beginning on Friday, Jan. 12 and most Fridays at 8 p.m., Club aka: will feature beach music and teach the 1940's dance style. Admission is free.
"There's no better way to beat the winter blues than to dance the shag," said Jim Reeks, president of the Roanoke Valley Shag Club. "Shag Fridays will be an opportunity to get out and dance while socializing with fellow shaggers."
The shag is the swing dance of the South, with hot moves like the boogie walk and the round house. In the dance, couples keep their footwork close to the ground and their upper body movements to a minimum. The dance originated along the shores between Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Wilmington, N.C.
"Club aka: is a great spot to meet new people, learn to dance the shag, and enjoy some of the best music ever recorded," said Rick Southard, director of marketing and event planning at the Hotel Roanoke.
Club aka: will feature Shag Fridays every Friday in January, February and March, except on Jan. 19, Feb. 16, and March 23. Club aka: is located in the basement of the Hotel Roanoke and features dance-club music on Saturday nights. For more information visit www.clubaka.com.
