The Roanoke Valley’s largest holiday celebration, The Roanoke Times Dickens of a Christmas, returns to it's original format this year, taking place on the first three Friday nights in December.

We're celebrating the 40th year of this community favorite event with loads of free activities. View the event details below with more information to follow. If you're interested in being a vendor at Dickens, download our vendor application. If you're interested in being in the parade, download our parade application.

  • Night 1 - December 2 - City of Roanoke Christmas Tree lighting on Salem Avenue in Wells Fargo Plaza. The ceremony begins at 5:30pm with tree lighting at 6:20pm and will include live stage performances.

  • Night 2 - December 9 - The City of Roanoke Christmas Parade begins on Jefferson Street at Elm Avenue, turning onto Campbell Avenue, going past Market Square, and ending at Williamson Road. This year’s parade will start at 6:30pm.

  • Night 3 - December 16 -  The Roanoke Valley SPCA brings back its beloved Pet Costume Contest December taking place on Salem Avenue at Wells Fargo Plaza. Pet owners may start registering their pets at 5:30pm the night of the event. Contest begins at 6:30pm.

Based on the 1942 Paramount Pictures film of the same name, Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn tells the story of Jim, who leaves behind the bright lights of show business to settle down in a small farmhouse in Connecticut. His luck takes a spectacular turn when he meets Linda, a spirited schoolteacher with talent to spare. Together, they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn where they put on dazzling performances to celebrate each holiday, from Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July. Will Jim be able to salvage his latest chance at love when his best friend Ted tries to lure Linda away? Celebrate the holiday season with this joyous musical features thrilling tap-dance numbers, laugh-out-loud comedy, and a parade of hit Irving Berlin songs, including “Blue Skies,” “Easter Parade,” “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” “Heat Wave,” “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Shaking the Blues Away,” and many more!

The Nutcracker Performance.

THE NUTCRACKER - December 9, 10 & 11

2022 will mark the 31st annual performance of SVB’s The Nutcracker at the Berglund Performing Arts Theatre, the Home of Southwest Virginia Ballet. This is the area’s largest Nutcracker performance and has been awarded Roanoke’s Best Annual Holiday Event in 2021, as well as Roanoke’s Best Art Performance in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022.

The Nutcracker is a timeless holiday tradition, the best-known of all ballets.  Each year SVB’s performance hosts a cast of more than 100 dancers, 200 costumes and 400 accessories! To take part in this production is to share the stage in one of Roanoke’s most cherished artistic events and honored holiday tradition of Virginia’s Blue Ridge.

Community members can perform as reindeers, mice, soldiers, party guests and more.

The Nutcracker performance dates are Friday, December 9 at 10am, Saturday, December 10 at 2 and 7pm and Sunday, December 11 at 3pm at the Berglund Performing Arts Theatre.

Step back in time and enjoy the Bank of Fincastle Tinsel Trail and Botetourt County Historical Museum Open House. This year the Museum open house includes the unveiling of the Bank of Fincastle Tinsel Trail, which features Christmas trees decorated by community businesses and organizations. Join us for this special holiday experience that is sure to warm hearts, and bring joy and amazement to all those who attend. On opening night, participate in small group tours of the Museum and enjoy home made mulled cider, hot chocolate, and appetizers. All these memories to make in the beautiful setting of historic Fincastle. This event is free and open to the public.
