RENOVATING THE GRAND OLD LADY

The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, Curio Collection by Hilton, has begun the initial phase of guest room renovations for the historic property with a $14-million makeover that brings new technology, a fresh design, and custom-made furniture to each of the property’s 328 guest rooms, including a new SALT Foot Sanctuary Suite and Health & Wellness Floor.

        INVESTING IN THE FUTURE

        The hotel’s most recent renovation, completed in 2020, upgraded The Pine Room restaurant, created the 1882 lobby bar and added infrastructure to support hybrid meetings in the 63,000-square-foot conference center. The current guestroom renovation will be conducted in phases, about 40 rooms at a time, beginning in February 2024. The overhaul is part of a cycle all Hilton hotels follow to upgrade their facilities and is expected to be complete by November 2024.

            Conference Center Expansion

            The Conference Center of Roanoke is planning to expand by 10%, which will be around 9,600 square feet, while adding guest recreational amenities.

            In a unique partnership of public and private funding, the initial $100 million investment to renovate the hotel for its 1995 reopening issued bonds, which are now 30 years old and set to expire. The facilities act returns 2% of the sales tax from the hotel and the conference center back to the city to pay for the debt of the original project. Other facilities around Virginia make use of that state law, but Hotel Roanoke is the only place in this city where it applies.

            Expansion concepts include enclosing the North Courtyard with a glass enclosure, and building an addition on the front lawn to include indoor and outdoor guest recreational amenities, and new conference space.

            The project is estimated to be around $9.75 million. A public hearing regarding the bond expiration and new issuance is scheduled for city council in April.
